Head of Mortgage Product

The Role
  • Ownership of the business’s retail lending strategy, guiding the generation, development and delivery of commercially saleable new products and propositions to the intermediary market and target customer groups.
  • Accountable for all aspects of the business’s mortgage portfolio – commercial contribution, performance, planning & profitability, for both new business flows and back book.
  • Ownership of the business’s Mortgage Product Development Framework accountable for embedding appropriate conduct risk assessment processes in the business to ensure that the business operates within agreed risk tolerances in an appropriate control environment with due regard for regulatory principles.
  • Leadership of the strategic aspects of the mortgage intermediary and  customer proposition, defining the target customer groups, creating roadmaps for product development and delivery channels, defining service standards for the operational teams
  • Leadership of the operational aspects of product development and pricing, responsible for working with the treasury and finance functions to maintain appropriate levels of liquidity, commercial trading performance, financial margin management, reporting and day-to-day management of the product development team
  • Optimise value creation through trading performance, using a combination of cost, volume and liquidity holding benefit. Seek out tactical opportunities to extract value using both sides of the balance sheet and market opportunities.
  • Define the intermediary market and direct customer lending proposition; determine service standards, channels, set pricing strategy, creating roadmaps and working cross functionally to increase customer numbers.
  • Responsible for the management and oversight of two distinct business areas Mortgage Product Development and Governance and Pricing across both new business flows and back book management
  • Accountable for the generation, evaluation and bringing to market of new products propositions and development opportunities that are saleable / viable and deliver enhanced commercial performance and cost / benefit for the business.
  • Working with the marketing team to use marketing analysis to test and learn from customer behaviors, using output to strengthen customer relationships and build advocacy
  • Establish opportunities to meet customer (including intermediary) needs & create sustainable value for the business, within strong conduct risk culture, and engage proactively with risk colleagues to establish appropriate risk criteria.
  • Own, develop and implement long term product strategies (growth & retention), including the underlying product propositions for the mortgage book.
  • Develop analytical capabilities to support the product strategies.
  • Understand and evaluate key competitors and their activity/strategies.
  • Use market, customer & intermediary insight to develop new opportunities with which to expand or defend existing segments, and differentiate our proposition, aligned to the Society’s vision.
  • Through effective coaching and personal development, ensure team members have the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding with which to perform effectively.
  • Gather, validate / sense check and analyses complex, multiple and contradictory data in order to make objective interpretations, which are then summarised and simplified for the benefit of the business and stakeholders
The Candidate
  • Degree or relevant qualification
  • 5+ years in retail banking environment preferable
  • Substantial/wide ranging experience in product development/ marketing based roles
  • Analytical and sound decision making skills
  • Report writing and presentation skills
  • Ability to adapt style and interact at all levels, maintaining credibility
  • Innovative thinker
